Phase 2 of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is akin to strengthening a bridge. Just as a bridge requires reinforcement to support heavy traffic, Phase 2 focuses on building and strengthening the client's psychological bridge to reinforce their foundation for processing traumatic memories.
So by now, some will be recognizing my love for analogies and Phase 2 will be no exception! In Phase 2, the client prepares a plan for ultimate performance with EMDR therapy. I liken this to training for a marathon (or any other event one might train for) - it takes time, dedication and planning. Phase 2 of EMDR is the phase where the client creates a plan for optimized healing in therapy. Like training for a marathon or any other event, it is best done collaboratively by assessing strengths, possible challenges, and adding to existing coping skills and resources that best support the journey. That way, if one does reach a rough patch in or out of session, this psychological bridge is reinforced and ready to support the added stress, just like a bridge which has been built to endure the extra weight of heavy vehicles.
In Phase 2, an individual plan is created collaboratively that includes coping techniques, stress management practices and problem- solving strategies. This plan utilizes the client's existing coping skills and is then reinforced with additional skills to help mitigate emotions and stress if/when needed. Support networks are also identified and a plan is put in place to strengthen these support networks. In-session check ins are shared to ensure skills and techniques are being effectively utilized outside of session and that in-session learning is generalizing to real life situations. Lastly, progress is monitored so that strategies can be reinforced or adjusted if needed. Optimization!
Overall, Phase 2 builds and strengthens the bridge for optimized healing, enabling clients to journey towards recovery with confidence.
